A Conscious Political Community - Using Technology to Join the Consciousness of Social Change
By Daniel Raphael, Ph.D. ~ 2002

The title historically has been an oxymoron, for most political communities, parties, and lobbying interests seem to consistently operate in self-centered, unconscious ways. But in this article we will discuss the many communities of conscious individuals who have yet to join together to become one of the most powerful political influences in American history. Those communities include what Paul H. Ray calls the North node of “The New Political Compass.” See:
http://www.culturalcreatives.org/Library/docs/NewPoliticalCompassV73.pdf

These groups discuss issues as, “ecological sustainability, with limits to growth and against the dominance [of] big-business and globalization; plus what are often seen as women’s perspectives on children, health, education, natural products and personal growth (both psychological and spiritual).” Ray calls the individuals who are inclined toward these issues as “Cultural Creatives,” (www.culturalcreatives.org) , “who are the constituencies of these movements: environmental becoming an ecology movement, anti-globalization, movements against violence and oppression, social justice, civil rights, women’s lib, anti-nuclear and anti-war becoming a peace movement, student movement, gay lib, and a newly emerging environmental health movement. And they are the common constituencies of movements we don’t usually see as political, or even as social movements, because they are mass changes in consciousness: human potential movement, holistic and alternative health care, organic ford and vegetarian movements, psychedelic and hippie movements, spiritual psychology, new religions, and event eh despised New Age movement.”… Those same people are going from movement to movement, retaining loyalties from one to the next, acting as the continuity among the movements, and they account for the convergence of all the movements onto a common worldview and set of values.” Thank you Paul H. Ray!

So, how do I get to join this community of consciousness? There are three ways, one of which is already occurring. The first is occurs when we meet someone at a time and place that is so uncanny and timely that the outcome seems to have been preplanned. It is a coincidence that has become so typical of this group of people that we say, “there are no coincidences anymore.” In other words, when you meet someone under this circumstance you already share a common state of consciousness that you both know that you belong to the same community. It is the opposite action of Murphy’s Law. We meet the people we are supposed to meet —joined by a shared consciousness. We meet each other because we are supposed to. There is an order to the universe that we share but are unaware of most of the time.

The second way to join this community of consciousness is through technological means, via the many means through Internet, whether via home or office PC or handheld Internet-connected device. And the means will only increase in the future. Theses are already being used within those constituent groups listed above. For example, the anti-fur people talk to each other and organize a rally, and vote against candidates who have received money for their campaigns from the fur industry. “Save the Ancient Trees” group does the same. Each group works on their own project, yet has so many values in common with all the other groups.

The third way is to actually state to yourself aloud or in the quiet recesses of your conscious mind, “I am a conscious part of the consciousness of wholeness that can heal the earth and all its people.” Or some such words that in general state that you recognize that you are a part of a larger group that has common values and interests. The intent of making this statement is to initiate a conscious connection to and with the larger consciousness of wholeness, and to allow and invite that connection to guide you in constructive ways to fulfill your individual and group objectives.

Doing so, you will come to see that you are truly a powerful part of an ever-enlarging group of individuals and groups with a common set of values and interests with compatible goals.

If these groups of common consciousness were to join together through the many technological means that are available, they would become one of the most powerful political forces for positive, constructive social change that has ever been seen in the world. Yes, the world, for the values of these constituencies are global —the setting for wholeness and healing that must and eventually will include everyone of the human family no matter where they live. The consciousness of responsible social change must begin with the individual, but can only become a reality when groups of like-thinking individuals make actual contact with other groups of like consciousness. Let us join together in a global consortium to develop focus our combined energies and actions for good. Let us overcome our divisions and engage the feminine influences of inclusiveness, “us,” “with,” “together,” to become a family of human consciousness for positive and responsible social action in local neighborhood communities, cities, states, regions, nations, and the world.
